Fallen Criminal Justice Alumnus Honored with HWY 99 Dedication
Local elected officials along with law enforcement members gathered for a dedication ceremony to rename a section of Highway 99 in Chambers County after fallen deputy and Sam Houston State University Criminal Justice alumnus Shane Detwiler.
Texas House District 23 Representative Mayes Middleton and Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne were among other local law enforcement, family, and friends present at the dedication ceremony for the newly designated Deputy Sheriff Shane Detwiler Memorial Highway on September 29.

SHSU Establishes First Department of Victim Studies in the U.S.
The College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University is proud to introduce its newest department, the Department of Victim Studies, following Board of Regents approval. Effective in the fall semester of 2020, the new department will house faculty whose research, training, and expertise focus on the specific degree programs related to victims. Departmental status will confer an advantage in recruiting highly specialized faculty needed to deliver these programs.

Student from SHSU Receives SMART Scholarship Award
Ryan Gutierrez, a third-year Forensic Science Ph.D. student at Sam Houston State University has recently been awarded the Department of Defense (DoD) Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship.

Research is one of the cornerstones of the program at the College of Criminal Justice, with a focus on bringing research into practice in the field. Through our partnership with federal, state and local agencies, as well as private foundations, the College is making a difference in the study of crime and justice and coming up with proven solutions for success. Our studies are regularly published in peer-reviewed journals and used to develop model programs to address key issues.
